Sifted as Wheat

Luke 22:31 And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat.”

There are certain times in our walk with the Lord that will include sifting.    We will have  trials, difficult moments and tests,  all of which is  part of God’s plan for our life.  The sifting has a definite purpose.

The process:
In order to sift  out the  edible grain  from the chaff ,  the wheat was thrown on the ground.  This process is called threshing.   The ground  was most likely stone and the wheat was beaten with a flail.  A flail consisted of a metal rod with chains on the end. Sometimes the flail had a ball with spikes.   The word itself means to strike with repeated blows.

The next step in sifting  is called winnowing.  Here the workers would throw the wheat into the air and the breeze would separate the chaff from the grain.  The grain which was heavier would land back on the stone floor, and the chaff would be taken by the breeze.  The chaff would land farther from the original stone.

If you notice, Jesus identified Peter as wheat and not chaff. He knew that he would land on the stone or rock, and be fruitful once the process ended.

Sifting is important for several reasons.   We are purged from self, from pride, and we learn not to rely on ourselves but on God. The chaff in our life will be removed.

When the sifting is complete, we will be strong enough to  encourage and strengthen our brothers and sisters in the Lord, and move onto greater and mightier things.

Peter was shaken, tossed, beaten in his faith, but guess what.  He landed on the rock, even when he denied Jesus three times.

Perhaps you have had a time in your life  where you feel that you have been beaten repeatedly, and then tossed into the air.  Just like Peter, you too will land on the rock!

One thing is certain, the sifting ended and the work was complete in Peter.

May the sifting come to an end, and may you rise up in what the Lord has for you, which is His good and perfect will for your life.

May you be richly blessed this day.

Stay Focused your Vision

Nehemiah 6:3 So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?”

In the first chapter of Nehemiah, Nehemiah receives word through Hanani that the wall of  Jerusalem are broken down and  the gates are burned with fire.

When Nehemiah heard the bad news, he mourned, fasted and prayed for many days.  After a few months, he was able to share his burden with the King to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the wall.

The book of Nehemiah  is filled with leadership qualities, and one quality of a leader is to stay focused on your vision.  This is true especially when it comes to ministry.

We can learn from reading this book  that we are sure to come against a Sanballat and Tobiah in our life.   These men were against the Lord’s plan from the beginning.  They mocked, ridiculed, spread rumors and tried everything they could do to hinder Nehemiah from rebuilding the wall.

But what did Nehemiah do?  He stayed focused on his vision; he did not stray from his goal of completing the wall.  The wall had to be rebuilt to keep the enemy out.

Nehemiah began building the wall months before through prayer and fasting, and was well rooted.    When God reveals by His Spirit a calling upon your life, that cannot be taken away, and it then that you begin building the walls in your ministry to come against the fiery darts of the enemy.

If you find yourself in a detour,  get back on track!   Realize that you have temporarily lost your focus, and get back to doing business with God.

May you be richly blessed this day.

Your Blessing is at Hand

2 Kings 5:10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored to you, and you shall be clean.”

I am sure most of us have come to the Lord with an urgent  prayer request, and when we begin our prayers it is our  nature to see the results come quickly.

I have thought about Naaman and his request to the Prophet Elisha to be healed from his  leprosy.  Naaman came to see the prophet, but Elisha sent his servant instead and  instructed Naaman to wash in the Jordan seven times.

When we ask the Lord for something, it is His nature to answer us in ways that we are not expecting.  Often time we need to exercise faith, and believe that what we heard was correct.

Can you imagine if Naaman stopped at the sixth washing in the Jordan River, giving up in frustration?  I often wonder how many times have I given up, not realizing that the answer I desired was just around the corner.  Yes, there are times  that I do feel like throwing in the towel,  but I have learned to  continue in the Lord.

Perseverance goes a long way!  The answer that we are hoping for may take longer, but what the Lord has said  will be fulfilled.  Exercise your faith, press on, because you are at the seventh dip in the Jordan River.

May you be richly blessed this day.

Liberty in Christ

Galations 5:12-13 I could wish that those who trouble you would even cut themselves off!  For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

I am sure many of us if not all of us at one time or another have  come across a person or group of people that we rather not have to deal with.  There will always be someone ready to  judge us, casually give us advice on how to do things better and even condemn us for our actions.  But we can’t cut them off, or can we?

We can either accept those words and receive condemnation or we can choose to be free in Christ.

The Apostle Paul states in Galatians that we are no longer under the law but under grace, and to lead a Christian life it is Christ who lives through us.   No amount of works, praying or singing will make us get it right, it is only Christ who lives through us will we be set free from works of the law.

I have come to understand that those who criticize, condemn and judge are under the law and judge by works, and I  feel sorry for them.  We will never get life perfect.  We will  stumble and  make mistakes.  But what happens when we fall?  We get right back up again and keep going.

As Christians, we have liberty in Christ.  Think about it, liberty in Christ! We are no longer under the law but under grace.  Grace does not set us free to sin, but sets us free from sin.

So, how do we cut those people off?  By not coming under condemnation.  By praying for them, by showing them how we  live in liberty, and  showing them the unconditional love of Christ.

We are not to  act out in the flesh, but in the love of Christ.   Love, that is our greatest weapon.

May you be richly blessed this day.

Defend your Testimony

Have you noticed that the world loves the plain, the common, the lackluster or even the average? In other words, it hates the miraculous, the Heavenly.

In the book of John 9:6-7 we read the account of the man blind from birth. Jesus heals him and he broke free of the daily routine and became an attraction. He became noticed and had a testimony.

In the book of John chapter 11 , Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, smashing to pieces the mundane and the predictable, he was an instant celebrity with a tremendous testimony.

The authorities of the status quo were shaken out of their comfort zone, there was a risk of losing their grip on the people. The culture, the society, the congregation were in danger of seeing the light and waking up. Something had to be done, so they plotted to bribe, intimidate, to silence or even kill these men because of their testimony.

The self-appointed gatekeepers of  progress and salvation take it upon themselves to make sure the average and the plain continue to rule and dominate this time on Earth. Many such people find comfort in the thought that we are “all in the same boat”, “all at the same level.”

If you have ever attempted to start an innovative project, ministry or business you know what I mean. Humanity pays a very high price for having the worldly running things.

Certainly the blind man and Lazarus were precursors of the greatest testimony in the whole universe, the Lord Jesus – His Life, His willing sacrifice and His resurrection. In Him, the abundance of loving miracles was and is too much for most, even today.

The Pharisees were upset with the miracles and those who took part in them:

John 11:47 -48 “What are we going to do? For this man performs many miraculous signs. If we let Him alone like this, everybody will believe in Him! …

The world wants to make us believe Jesus was not whom He said He was, that He did not really do what He did and that the Bible is not factual but a mere fairy tale.

But you KNOW that you KNOW what He has done in your life. Guard and defend your testimony in Jesus with all your heart, it keeps you and others around you on the narrow path.

Thank you Father for in You alone there is Hope, Wisdom and Peace beyond what the world can provide. Your people are now free of fear and limitations because  through Jesus Christ we have access to Heavenly Miracles, Amen.

All that shines is not light

While the world seems to become smaller, time appears to be accelerating and the saturation of information engulfs us, it is rather easy to be distracted by imitations of those things which really matter and ought to draw our attention.

The flashing Christmas lights, the bright and dynamic electronics, the news, the media are all competing for the one thing we can give our Creator – our attention, which becomes our time and our obedience.

We need discipline in order to stay focused and run the good race.  This year we must discern the times and resist the distractions, many of which come with a plan and a purpose, to derail us – that is.

We need to understand there is only one “True Light” and that we have become sons and daughters of Light and the darkness has left our conscience.

In the Gospel of John chapter 9, verse 5 Jesus Himself tells us that He is the Light of the world. “As long as I am in the world, I am the light in the world”. This fact is what should anchor us and hold our attention and bring out the best fruit we can produce.

Father, we pray that this year we follow you closely and we can honor your Light, your Spirit who dwells in us. Help us to be the salt of the Earth and share your Light freely and boldly.

Love Never Fails

Hebrews 10:24- 25   And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,  not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

For several years we have been attending a  Spanish-speaking church.  I knew the Lord wanted us in a Spanish church even though  there are several English-speaking churches in Costa Rica.   At first I felt that I did not fit it.   Although I understand and speak Spanish fluently,  I still had some difficulty expressing myself and even praying in Spanish.

As time passed, I began to feel more comfortable and found myself expressing myself better in my second language.  But there was a greater force behind all of this.  It is the love of the leaders and congregation towards each other and towards me.  I realized that  I that was making myself feel out of place.  I was accepted from the first day I set foot into the place where we met, a small rental apartment  with 20 people.

As the love began pouring out, the congregation grew. We moved out of the small rental  and are now renting a larger building where all 120 of us are located, and  are now looking for a bigger location.

Pouring out love only causes an increase.  Pouring out of yourself into others only causes an increase.  Jesus poured out of himself on the cross, and what started with 12 disciples is now a worldwide movement of followers.

Trust in the Lord, begin pouring out in love and see an increase in all areas of your life.

May you be richly blessed this day.
