Having a ready mind
Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.(KJV)
I am sure we have all heard the term, ¨having an open mind¨ at one time or another. I remember being in the workplace, and when a discussion would arise on the topic of Christianity, many of them would use the line I just mentioned.
This was their excuse to explore other religions out there, picking what would suit them. Being young in the Lord at that time, I was unaware of this verse, and did not know how to respond.
I do know from experience that we are not to have an open mind. Doing so, results in an open door for the enemy and can result in dangerous consequences.
This verse in Acts talks about having a ready mind, a mind ready for the things of God, for the moving of the Holy Spirit, and for the will of God in our lives.
Not long ago my husbands´ consulting work had slowed down, and we soon found out that his boss was calling other people to do his work at a lower pay rate, other promises were not kept. Instead of being upset or angry, we accepted this as the will of God, and placed our trust in Him.
As we continued to pray, we found out that those hired in his place had made some errors. We also found out that my husband may have made the same mistakes if doing the job, as these were the bosses´ directives.
We thanked the Lord for his protection, and it turned out that my husband was called in to fix the costly errors. He made some very wise decisions, the mistakes were taken care of and things got back on track.
During this slow time, the Lord opened other doors for us in other areas which turned out to be an extreme blessing.
How would have things turned out if we were angry, bitter or upset? Would the other opportunities have opened up for us if we had bitterness in our heart or held resentment towards his employer?
We did not have an open mind in this matter, we had a ready mind, a mind ready for what God was going to do, and we waited patiently in Him, and God showed himself in this matter. During this time, the Lord had given us peace, and we knew He was up to something exciting. It was like waiting for a present, for we knew DAD would have better things for us. We just thanked him in advance and did not try to figure how it was all going to happen and what or whom He would use to bless us. It is always exciting.
May you have a ready mind for what God is doing and changing in your life this season. Doing so just may result in blessings you had not imagined.
Blessings in Him

Great post, Yvette! In college I had a poster that said, “I used to have an open mind, but my brains kept falling out.” It was meant as a joke, but I soon learned that it can be quite true. I like the idea of a ready mind.
Yvette, once again you have made a important point. I still struggle with the desire to figure out in advance exactly how God will or “should” take care of things, instead of just allowing Him to work while I mind my business and wait in prayer and faith. Then I wonder why I’m frustrated!
Bless you for your fresh word that lines up with God’s word.
P.S. I love annaldavis’s comment above.
Ana and Diane,
thank you for your comments. Anna´s line is funny, but so true!
There are times when I struggle as well, wondering how God will do this or that, but as always, He comes through, even at the 11th hour!
Bless you both.
