After moving out of California, I'm glad to say that I've left the ants behind. I don't think my OCD could have taken much more of them! Never had a problem with them in New York or Nashville, but here in Richmond they are a huge problem. I thought I'd lose my mind trying to fight those stubborn little creature in the summer of 2007, my first summer here. I killed literally tens of thousands. This summer I gave up at the first sign and hired a very good exterminator. But aside from the horror of being swarmed by ants, I certainly can learn from them. They even go after stuff they can't eat, like Sweet N Lo, just because it smells like sugar I guess. I'm usually tenacious, but not as bold as the ants. They just come and come and come after what they want, not caring how many other ants fail in front of their eyes. Yvette, I know the ants well.
